HEALTH IN THE AMERICAS WEEK KICKS OFF APRIL 7

For the first time ever, "Health in the Americas Week" started this
Monday, beginning with the observance of World Health Day on April 7 at
the Pan American Health Organization and many other sites. The events
of the week are dedicated to promoting healthier environments for all
children in the Americas. "By promoting healthy homes, healthy schools
and healthy communities, we can shape the future and make a real
difference in the lives of millions of children," said Dr. Mirta Roses,
director of PAHO. Events continue at PAHO Headquarters until April 14.

In Ottawa, the Canadian Society for International Health, on behalf of
PAHO, collaborated with the Canadian Institute on Child Health, Health
Canada and Environment Canada in holding a workshop on Children's Health
and the Environment. Eleven-year-old Ryan Hreljac, who founded the
Ryan's Well Foundation to supply village wells in Uganda, was the
lunchtime speaker and received a standing ovation. He has been raising
funds for clean water projects in the developing world since the age of
six and has already received Canada's Meritorious Service Medal and the
Canadian Peace Award.
