resistance." It will be edited by Kimberly Scott, Principal, Kishk
Anaquot Health Research. Articles will be considered that illustrate
practical solutions to the fundamental question: Given what we know

"Reducing Environmental Risks" and "Improving Individual Resistance."

TACTICS TO CHANGE IN BATTLE AGAINST POLIO

Leading experts of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have
announced a tactical shift in efforts to rid the world of polio.
Immunization campaigns will be revised in 93 countries where polio
transmission has already been curbed in order to commit additional funds
to the remaining seven polio-endemic countries, and the six countries
considered at high risk of reinfection. The shift comes in response to
the changing epidemiology of the disease, with polio more geographically
contained than ever. Only seven countries remain endemic: India,
Nigeria, Pakistan, Egypt, Afghanistan, Niger, and Somalia (listed from
highest to lowest burden of disease). Virtually all the world’s polio
cases (99 per cent) are concentrated in just three countries: India,
Nigeria and Pakistan. For the full article, visit:

CANADA SUPPORTS HEALTH CARE IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA THROUGH QUEEN'S
UNIVERSITY

Minister for International Cooperation Susan Whelan has announced a CIDA
contribution of $6 million for the Queen's University Family Medicine
Development Program in the Balkans. CIDA has supported the program
since its inception in 1995. The program has helped make family medicine
the foundation of primary health care in Bosnia and Herzegovina by
increasing access to, and quality of, care at the community level
through the development of family medicine centres throughout the
country. The new funding will contribute to the third phase of the
Family Medicine Development Program, and will enable the program to
continue its activities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to
expand to Serbia and Montenegro. For the full press release, visit:

USAID-FUNDED PUBLIC HEALTH OPPORTUNITIES IN IRAQ

The US government through the Agency for International Development
(USAID) has awarded two contracts for Iraq reconstruction that have
health components: Bechtel has received the contract that will deal with
physical reconstruction of the health infrastructure, and ABT Associates
has received the contract for the public health aspects. Normally,
foreign firms cannot be subcontractors on USAID projects because of the
Buy America Act. However, this has been waived for projects in Iraq and
Canadian firms can be subcontractors. Canadian organizations interested
in the health aspects of Iraqi reconstruction should contact ABT
Associates directly through their website: http://www.abtassociates.com/
Interested organizations should review the Iraqi Reconstruction website
prepared by the Canadian
embassy(http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/sell2usgov/iraq-en.asp) and also
the USAID web site (http://www.usaid.gov/iraq/)
