RESEARCH AND COOPERATION GO HAND IN HAND IN THE AMERICAS

In a region with as many public health challenges as the Americas,
research is essential. However, scientific research can be too great an
expense for individual countries, and the sharing of results tends to be
hindered by lack of information technologies or by inadequate planning.
PAHO's Research Coordination Program has shown that cooperation and
Pan-Americanism play an essential role in terms of research. The Program
seeks to integrate investigative projects carried out in the different
countries of the region in order to help each researcher know what
others are doing and to share efforts and results. The program helps
researchers use limited resources more efficiently and directs the focus
of research on equitable health. The program works in close
collaboration with all PAHO centers, universities, research centers,
hospitals, schools of medicine, ministries of health, and other
institutions involved in research in the public health sector in the
region. Its emphasis is on using research results as elements for public
health policies in the countries. For more information, visit:

YOUNG MEN AS ALLIES IN THE PROMOTION OF HEALTH AND GENDER EQUITY

From August 27-30, 2002, the conference "Young Men as Allies in the
Promotion of Health and Gender Equity" will be held in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. The event is targeted at individuals and organizations that work
in the areas of gender and adolescent health and will consist of a
mixture of recent research and program experiences. The conference will
address issues including fatherhood, gender, masculinities, violence,
and sexual and reproductive health. It is expected that most of the
participants will come from the Latin American region, but there will
also be individuals from other regions including North America, Africa
the Middle East and Asia who will come together to share about working
with young men, to learn about the experiences of others and also to
discuss how to proceed in this area. For the press release, visit:

NEW PAHO PUBLICATION: "TRADE IN HEALTH SERVICES"

A newly published book by PAHO compiles papers that were presented at
the 1999 Inter-Regional Meeting on Health and Trade: Toward the
Millennium Round. Conference participants emphasized the need for the
health sector and the trade sector to work together so that health
priorities are properly taken into account when trade agreements are
negotiated. The papers provide an overview of the issues, regional
perspectives and country case studies, and conclusions and
recommendations. For more information, visit:

WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION AGREEMENTS AND PUBLIC HEALTH

WHO and the World Trade Organization Secretariat have released a study
about the relationship between trade rules and public health. The study
explains how WTO agreements relate to different aspects of health
policies. The study covers areas such as drugs and intellectual property
rights, food safety, tobacco and many other issues which have been
subject to passionate debate. It also looks at the challenges and
opportunities in implementing coherent trade and health policies. For
further information on the study or to download a copy in PDF format,

GOOD HEALTH FOR ALL: VITAL FOR REDUCING POVERTY AND SUSTAINING
DEVELOPMENT

The World Summit on Sustainable Development will set the agenda for the

resources and safeguarding our common future. In its presentation on the
Summit's first day, WHO presented a road map for how health can be used
as a powerful and undervalued tool for sustainable development. The
presentation is available at the WHO website:
