DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE COMMITTEE'S PEER REVIEW OF CANADA

During the review of Canada's development co-operation policies and
programs on November 15, 2002, the Development Assistance Committee
(DAC) acknowledged Canada's special ability to help lead the
international community towards actions that push out the frontiers of
international co-operation in areas such as gender equality and capacity
building. For more information on this review, see the press release at:

LIGHTING FIRES FOR TOBACCO CONTROL

The International Development Research Centre has a feature on tobacco
control in its online magazine Reports. In "Viewpoint: Lighting Fires
for Tobacco Control," Linda Waverley Brigden writes: "When it comes to
dealing with the ill-effects of tobacco consumption, politicians don’t
so much see the light as they feel the fire. The question for
researchers is: how can we help light the fires that motivate people?"

SUCCESSFUL RIVER BLINDNESS CAMPAIGN IN WEST AFRICA ENDS

On Friday, December 6, 2002, history was made. This day officially
marked the end of nearly 30 years of work to eliminate river blindness
as a public health threat in West Africa. On Friday in Ouagadougou,
Burkina Faso, officials from the World Health Organization and other
organizations recognized the achievement of thousands of people working
together for a greater good. These people – bankers, fly catchers,
pilots, chief executives, community health workers and others – have
prevented 600,000 cases of blindness. Their efforts mean that 18 million
people have grown up free of the threat of river blindness. Because of
the work of those involved in the Onchocerciasis Control Program (OCP),
thousands of farmers are now moving to reclaim 25 million hectares of
fertile river land, enough land to feed 17 million people. For further
details, visit: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/releases/pr93/en/.

YOUR CHILD'S BEST SHOT: A PARENT'S GUIDE TO VACCINATION

The Canadian Paediatric Society has published the second edition of its
popular book "Your Child's Best Shot: A Parent's Guide to Vaccination".
Myths and misinformation about vaccines are everywhere; for parents
trying to make decisions about immunizing their children, this can be
scary. Are vaccines safe? Do children need all these shots? Will my
child suffer side effects? These are just some of the questions parents
ask. The guide can help them make informed decisions. For more
