EL SALVADOR HEALTH MINISTER OPENS WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY DOMINATED BY
SARS / CANADIAN ELECTED TO HIGH OFFICE

Dr. José Francisco López Beltrán, El Salvador's Minister of public
health and social assistance, opened the 56th World Health Assembly this
week, citing the importance of international collaboration to combat
disease. The Assembly's agenda is dominated by SARS. "This is one world
and no one can hide a disease outbreak for long," Dr. López Beltrán
said. "The many victims of SARS include health workers, particularly
doctors and nurses. In such moments the importance of WHO becomes
clear."

PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses Periago said themes such as SARS and
bioterrorism "raise awareness of the importance of international
cooperation, the free flow of information among countries, and the key
role of international agencies such as the Pan American Health
Organization and the World Health Organization."

The Assembly, composed of all 192 member countries of WHO, is discussing
a series of health topics ranging from tobacco to global polio
eradication, and is also set to elect Dr. Jong-Wook Lee of Korea as the
new Director-General of WHO, to replace Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland of
Norway who is retiring. Dr. Lee would take office July 21, 2003 for a
five-year term. For the full press release, visit:

Assembly. For the full press release, visit:

LATEST EDITION OF PERSPECTIVES IN HEALTH IS NOW ONLINE

Childhood is a time for playing, learning and exploring. But the world
can be a dangerous place for children living in poverty. Making
environments safer and healthier for kids in low-income communities is
the subject of the cover story of the latest issue of PAHO's magazine
Perspectives in Health. Other features include: the new wave of AIDS,
deadly secrets of the tobacco industry, and how 100 Salvadoran families
found new homes in the aftermath of an earthquake. Visit:

HYPERTENSION AFFECTS 140 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE CONTINENT

Hypertension is silent disorder, often without symptoms, that affects
140 million people in the region, though half of them don't even know
they have it, according to figures from PAHO. The condition is one of
the most important risk factors for the emergence of cardiovascular
diseases such as stroke or ischemic heart disease, which are leading
causes of premature death in the majority of the countries. According
to the PAHO publication Health in the Americas, just a slight reduction
in blood pressure could reduce mortality from those causes by 15 to 40
percent, especially in people over 65 years of age. For more
information, visit: http://www.paho.org/English/DD/PIN/pr030516.htm

PAHO EAGER TO SEE END OF POLIO, WELCOMES TACTICAL SHIFT IN WORLD'S
LARGEST PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVE

Dr. Gina Tambini, head of PAHO's Family and Community Health programs,
said that the Region is eager to see the end of polio, a process that
began in the Americas in 1985 when PAHO declared it would seek to drive
the crippling disease from the hemisphere. Speaking at a press
conference of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, she said that
polio eradication, the largest public health initiative in history, must
be intensified worldwide to reach the same success achieved in the
Americas, which was declared polio-free in 1994. Dr. Tambini also
announced that the first ever Vaccination Week in the Americas is on
track to take place the first week of June, with all countries in South
America, plus Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Bahamas
focusing on children who have not been vaccinated in indigenous
communities, marginal urban areas, remote areas and frontier zones. For
