is inviting interested parties to participate in online working groups
that are discussing the application of science and technology in
achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The goals, commonly accepted

•       to improve maternal health;

LEPROSY IN THE AMERICAS: BRAZIL'S PIONEERING ROLE IN THE PUSH FOR
ELIMINATION

WHO has declared leprosy (Hanseniasis) to be one of the priority
diseases within its group of tropical diseases, going so far as to
create a special task force devoted to the elimination of this disease.
In the Americas, Hanseniasis has not yet been eliminated and affects the
entire Region. For this reason, the PAHO Communicable Disease Unit has a
special group devoted exclusively to the elimination of Hanseniasis.
Brazil being one of the countries most affected, it has served as a
pioneer in its elimination activities and mass-communication campaigns.

NEW PAHO PARTNERSHIP: REDUCING CHILD DEATHS

PAHO and the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) have launched a new,
three-year partnership seeking to reduce deaths of children under the
age of 5: Action for Family Health. The partnership joins Catholic
healthcare networks, PAHO, and ministries of health in El Salvador,
Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Nearly 500,000
young children die every year in Latin America. Approximately two-thirds
of these deaths are primarily due to respiratory infections, diarrheal
diseases, mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, nutrition-related
illnesses and perinatal complications. For more information, visit:

GENSALUD VIRTUAL LIBRARY

As part of its gender and health information strategy, the Pan-American
Health Organization's Gender and Health Unit has developed a Virtual
Library on gender and health issues, which brings together disparate
information resources and services from across the region. Though the
English version of the Library is still under construction, the Spanish
version has already been launched at a workshop in Central America. The
primary objective of this project is to provide a central point of
access to gender and health information through the collection,
organization and digitalization of relevant and useful thematic
resources. For more information, visit:

GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING OF THE BREASTFED CHILD

Adequate nutrition during infancy and early childhood is fundamental to
the development of each child’s full human potential. Complementary
feeding is defined as the process starting when breast milk alone is no
longer sufficient to meet the nutritional requirements of infants and
other foods and liquids are needed. The guidelines in this document can
be used as the basis for developing recommendations on complementary
feeding. This document is available in PDF format at:
