PAHO 2004 TRAINING PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH: JULY 31 IS THE
DEADLINE!
Young health professionals in the Americas (35 years old or less), who
have leadership skills as well as an intense interest in the
international dimensions of health, are invited to apply for the Pan
American Health Organization's 18th Training Program in International
Health (TPIH-2004). The training process will involve participants in a
work-study format at PAHO in Washington, D.C., for a period of 11 months
starting February 2, 2004.
Canadian candidates are invited to request their application form and a
complete information package via email to the following address:

receipt of applications is July 31, 2003.

PAHO MEETING FOCUSES ON YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Youth from around the Americas will gather in the Dominican Republic
later this month to draft a declaration on children's rights and
responsibilities and debate their role in sustainable development.
The theme of the Americas Youth Voice meeting, taking place from July
21-23, 2003, is "Youth and Poverty". The youth leaders will analyze the
current situation of adolescents and youth based on programs, plans and
policies for the XII Summit of the First Ladies, Wives and
Representatives of Heads of State and Government of the Americas, to be

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: 2003 CLARENCE MOORE AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE
The Pan American Health and Education Foundation is calling for
nominations for the 2003 Clarence Moore Award for Voluntary Service.
This award recognizes outstanding contributions to public health by
individual volunteers or non-governmental organizations working to
improve the lives of the people in Latin America and the Caribbean. The
award is named for Clarence Moore, a distinguished public administrator
and man of high idealism and altruistic motivation. Moore believed that
collective action, both through the public sector and on a voluntary
basis, could play a leading role in fighting poverty and maintaining
human dignity. The deadline for submitting nominations is August 15,

The 2003 Edition of PAHO's publication "Health Statistics from the
Americas" is now available in electronic format. The publication
presents mortality data submitted by individual countries of the
Americas, as well as other useful health information, for dissemination

ESTIMATING THE PROGRAM COSTS OF HEALTH INTERVENTIONS
The WHO has published the article "Program costs in the economic
evaluation of health interventions." The authors write, "Estimating the
costs of health interventions is important to policy-makers for a number
of reasons including the fact that the results can be used as a
component in the assessment and improvement of their health system
performance...Program costs, defined as costs incurred at the
administrative levels outside the point of delivery of health care to
beneficiaries, may comprise an important component of total costs. The

ATLAS OF HEALTH IN EUROPE
WHO's Regional Office for Europe has published the "Atlas of Health in
Europe." This statistical atlas presents key health figures for the
European region. They cover basic demographic data, mortality and
morbidity, lifestyles and environmental indicators such as alcohol
consumption and road traffic accidents, and types and levels of health

The WHO's new website on Health Impact Assessment (HIA) provides
user-friendly access to international examples of HIA practice and key
documents, tools and methods, evaluations, links with individual-nation
