DRS. GARCIA AND ETIENNE TAKE OFFICE AS PAHO’S DEPUTY AND ASSISTANT
DIRECTORS

Drs. Joxel García and Carissa Etienne were sworn in August 5 as the
deputy and assistant directors of the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO). The act marked the second stage of transition for the
administration of Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, who became PAHO's director in
February.

Dr. Joxel García, the new deputy director, was born in Puerto Rico. He
served as the commissioner of Connecticut's Department of Public Health,
where he initiated a number of innovative projects surrounding women's
health, community involvement and health literacy. He is a nationally
recognized gynecological surgeon who combines his skills in health
policy, administration, business and marketing. In addition to his
medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine, he holds a Masters of
Business Administration from the University of Hartford.

Dr. Etienne, a native of Dominica, was trained as a general practitioner
at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. She also received a
master's degree in community health from the London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine. She served as medical director at Princess
Margaret Hospital as well as holding Ministry of Health positions in the
national AIDS program and emergency preparedness.

BETEL-QUID AND ARECA-NUT CHEWING CARCINOGENIC TO HUMANS

It is well known that tobacco chewing causes cancer - particularly of
the oral cavity. An international working group of scientific experts
convened by the Monographs Program of the International Agency for
Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, has
now found compelling evidence that chewing betel quid without tobacco
can cause cancer in humans. In addition, the Working Group found that
areca nut, a common component of many chewing preparations, also causes
cancer in humans. Betel-quid and areca-nut chewing are common in many
parts of Asia and amongst Asian-migrant communities elsewhere. There
are hundreds of millions of users worldwide, and there is great concern
that the habit will spread to populations in North America and Europe
not previously exposed. For the full text, visit http://www.iarc.fr/

DENGUE INFECTION MORE SERIOUS FOR ELDERLY PERSONS

Older people who become infected with the dengue virus are more likely
to need hospitalization, more likely to suffer severe forms of the
infection, and are more likely to die compared to any other age group
except infants. These findings are a part of the first research study to
analyze the clinical manifestations of dengue infection among persons 65
and older. The findings are described in the June 2003 issue of PAHO's
Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública/Pan American Journal of Public
Health. For more information on the article, visit:
