BELIZE WORKING FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE

The Minister of Health of Belize, José Coye, visited the Pan American
Health Organization in Washington recently to highlight the work his
country is doing with HIV/AIDS prevention programs and to ensure
universal health coverage. According to UNAIDS, there were 2,500 people
in Belize in 2002 living with HIV/AIDS in a population of 265,200
inhabitants. Although small, Belize faces the same trends that challenge
other countries of the region: an increase in non-communicable diseases
such as diabetes and hypertension, a great number of deaths caused by
traffic accidents, and communicable diseases which are only partially
under control. For the full text, visit:

BOLIVIA’S PUBLIC HEALTH CARE REFORMS AIMED AT WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Bolivia’s Minister of Health and Sports, Dr. Javier Torres Goitia C.,
presented an in-depth analysis of the situation of public health in his
country during a recent visit to PAHO headquarters in Washington. Dr.
Torres Goitia's presentation highlighted the work being done in
reforming Bolivia's public health care, with emphasis on programs
directed to women and children under five years of age. One of the key
aspects of that reform is a national health-care program for mothers and
small children known as SUMI, the Spanish-language acronym for Seguro
Universal Materno Infantil. For more details, visit
