ATTENTION CSIH MEMBERS: ELECTION TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Every two years the Canadian Society for International Health holds
elections for members of the Society to serve on the Board of Directors.
This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in providing
leadership and overall direction to the society. Board members need to
be dedicated to international health and development and have the time
to attend at least four Board meetings a year [some by teleconference],
and to sit on the society's various sub-committees and task forces.

Persons nominated should be prepared to serve for a two-year term and to
participate in the next meeting of the Board, which will be held October
24-25, 2003, in Ottawa, just prior to the 10th Canadian Conference on
International Health. The Society covers all expenses related to
participation in Board meetings.

Board members are responsible for:
•       establishing policies and strategic directions for the Society;
•       safeguarding the Society's assets;
•       serving as a contact with the membership of the Society;
• representing the Society to policy makers and others interested
in international health;
• participating in, and chairing when necessary, committees of the
Society;
•       assisting in the recruitment and retention of members;
• participating in all Board meetings - two face-to-face meetings
each year, usually on weekends in June and October, and two one-to-two
hour teleconference meetings, usually in March and September.

The call for nominations and nomination forms for the Board elections
are presently in the mail to you. Please watch your mail for this
documentation or you may visit our website at www.csih.org. All
nominees and their nominators must be members in good standing of CSIH.
Deadline for receiving completed nomination forms is 5:00 p.m. EDT,
Friday, September 5th, 2003. Faxed or e-mailed forms will be accepted.

LAUNCH OF THE UN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2003

The United Nations Association in Canada and the UN Development
Programme (UNDP) are inviting interested parties to take part in the
Canadian launch of the Human Development Report 2003. The launch will
take place on Tuesday, July 8 at 9:30 a.m. at the National Press Club at
165 Sparks Street, 2nd Floor in Ottawa. The event will feature both the
presentation of the Report and reactions in terms of specific issues and
significant indicators. The 14th edition of the annual Human Development
Report, commissioned by the UNDP, offers a timely analysis of the range
of human development in the world, noting that it is vast and uneven,
with astounding progress in some areas, amidst stagnation and dismal
decline in others. Balance and stability in the world will require the
commitment of all nations, rich and poor, and a global development
compact to extend the wealth of possibilities to all people. For more
information please contact Joan Broughton, UNA-Canada’s Public
Information Officer at: (613) 232-5751 ext 230; email [log in to unmask]

HEALTH CANADA APPROVES VANCOUVER SUPERVISED INJECTION SITE PILOT
RESEARCH PROJECT

Health Canada has approved in principle the Vancouver Coastal Health
Authority's application for an exemption under Section 56 of the
Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) to launch a supervised
injection site pilot research project. Health Canada would also provide
up to $1.5 million over four years to support the evaluation component
of the project. The goal of the project is to assess whether the
establishment of a supervised injection site pilot research project in
the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver will reduce the harm associated with
illicit drug use, improve the health of drug-users, increase appropriate
use of health and social services by drug-users, and reduce the health,
social, legal and incarceration costs associated with drug use. For the

VIEWPOINT: SARS, AIDS, AND PUBLIC HEALTH

In their online magazine Reports, the International Development Research
Centre (IDRC) has published the article " Viewpoint: SARS, AIDS, and
Public Health." Christina Zarowsky writes, " For most of the past
century, the spread of mysterious, frightening infectious diseases is
something that’s occurred mostly in poorer parts of the planet. Enter
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which has suddenly put Canada
on the same plane — in the eyes of much of the world — as rural China.
Tragic as it has been, Canada’s experience of SARS has a potentially
positive outgrowth. It can drive home some critical lessons about public
health that many developing countries have paid dearly to learn. For the
