In our community we developed a community toy box. The idea was to
increase opportunity for physical activity for all children.( regardless of
anything). We chose skating this winter as a pilot activity as we have
access to frozen ice surfaces. Community partners donated space/ time and
people to collect the skates, the city provided snow plowing/ maintenance of
the lake surface, people translated information, posters were made and
distributed and children came to play. There was / is no charge for the
skates or the lake skating. It is hoped that we can expand this concept to
include "gently used" running shoes in the spring. Paula R. Worton R.N.,BScN
