In answer to the question -"..what will be achieved for people of
this age and in this setting by quitting?" the answer is simply - the same
thing that happens to anyone of any age who quits smoking. They can breathe
better; their heart doesnt have to work as hard so they have more energy and
they have a feeling of accomplishment and empowerment.
Quitting isnt always a traumatic process that requires personal
support and counselling. People quit without either every day - even those
in nursing homes.
I would encourage anyone working with elderly smokers to provide
information on quitting - it's the same basic principles for everyone no
matter what their age.
