Subject:    NCHS and CDC publish Health Rankings among nations


Every year now the feds publish a Health, USA book, and it has lots of
interesting data.  The 2003 one just came out and is available at

The section on page 53 of the pdf has material on life expectancy that
refers to tables 26 making comparisons to other countries, and the
subsequent section about infant mortality referred to tables 25.  We don't
look too good.  Even though the data only go to 1998, but they promise
some updates in November, though not for these tables, just the
age-adjusted mortality rates and life expectancies for the US.

Lots of other good material, some of it striking, such as figure 26 with
mortality trends 1950 to 2000 among 25-44 aged people, with HIV disease as
an inverted V.  The text is quite guarded in pointing the racial
disparities, and not suggesting ses is involved.
