 *Coming Together: Homeless Women, Housing and Social Support** is* *a
community-based research project using an innovative arts-based research
method (staged photography). * The qualitative research study began by
interviewing 20 women/transwomen and 13 service providers to identify key
themes. These themes were then explored in the art-making process with other
women and transwomen at drop-in centres across the city. Through painting,
drama and photography these women/transwomen depicted their visions and
stories of inclusion, friendship and safe spaces. This project is conducted
by the university-community research partnership comprised of the University
of Toronto Faculty of Social Work, Regent Park Community Health Centre, and
Sistering - A Woman's Place.

 *The Research and Exhibit Launch* will kick off with a presentation by the
research partners, including members of the Advisory Board who have
experienced homelessness themselves and generously contributed their
knowledge to this project. The exhibit will display the photographs,
costumes and murals that illustrate the research findings. These artistic
scenes depict:

 · The ways in which women and transwomen support each other through
support networks;

·         What safe and sustainable housing should look like;

·         How women/transwomen help each other survive violence;

 as well as needed changes to social services including:

·         More Aboriginal-led services;

·         More trans-inclusive services;

· Accessible, informal counselling services that are based on harm
reduction models;

· Empowerment-oriented services that are centred in women's
strengths and resourcefulness.
