The Jacksonville Commuinity Council Inc. (JCCI) is publishing the 1998
updates of its two community indicators documents.

The Quality of Life Indicators document, in its 14th annual update, was
released jointly on November 18 by JCCI, the Jacksonville Chamber of
Commerce, and the City of Jacksonville. It contains 71 indicators of
the quality of life in Jacksonville/Duval County, Florida.

The Community Agenda document, in its 4th annual update, will be
released by JCCI and United Way of Northeast Florida on December 17. It
contains 54 indicators of health and human services, covering five
Northeast Florida counties that make up the Jacksonville urban region.

Unfortunately, budgetary constraints require charging for the documents
(with payment in advance). Each is available for $25, including postage
and handling, within the U.S. An executive summary of the Quality of
Life indicators document is available for $15. It is meant for
widespread dissemination and use by the general public. The larger
documents are reference documents, containing detailed information about
each indicator, including sources of data and methods of calculation.

The Quality of Life indicators are evaluated against community targets
for the year 2000. Those moving decidedly positively earn gold stars,
indicating cause for celebration, while those moving negatively or
remaining far from their targets earn red flags, indicating the need for
community improvement.

These two indicator sets are becoming increasingly important, year by
year, in the public decision making process in our community. Public
officials and nonprofit organizations alike use the indicators as a
guide for strategic and policy planning, setting priorities, budgeting,
allocating funds, and evaluating for accountability.

I'd be happy to respond to inquiries or questions concerning these
indicators projects..

David
