1. NEW ISSUE OF RESEARCH UPDATE

Both Research Update articles are available at

- "Depression as a Barrier to Older Adult Participation in Physical
Activity"
by Riva Benditt (MA student), Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation,
University of Alberta.
Riva Benditt looks at the results of a recent study funded by the Social
Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada on the barriers to
physical activity faced by older adults with depression.

- "Evaluating the G8 Commitment to Health and Development"
by Ronald Labonte (Director) and Ted Schrecker (Professional Research
Associate), Saskatchewan Population Health and Evaluation Research Unit
(SPHERU).
The authors discuss whether the world's richest nations have lived up to
their commitments to global health and development. The full results of this
study are available in Fatal Indifference: The G8, Africa and Global Health
(order information is available on the SPHERU web site at www.spheru.ca).
All proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Stephen Lewis
Foundation.

and to find out about recent acquisitions.

The Alberta Centre for Active Living is a non-profit centre that focuses on
research and education in physical activity. We are funded by Alberta
Community Development and the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks & Wildlife
Foundation and are affiliated with the Faculty of Physical Education and
Recreation at the University of Alberta.

B. News from the Canadian Health Network (CHN)
The Alberta Centre for Active Living is the Active Living affiliate for the
Canadian Health Network.

CHN Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
We have added 11 new FAQs to the CHN Active Living page. To view them, go to
www.canadian-health-network.ca. Once you've entered the web site, click on
"Active Living" and then on "FAQs." Watch for three more FAQs this year,
covering the following topics: stretching, youth strength training, and
leisure and recreation.

CHN Healthy Byte:
Take a look at the Active Living Healthy Byte, "How can teen girls be
physically active and still be cool?," on CHN's home page
(www.canadian-health-network.ca) starting on  March 16.

CHN has a new look!
When you visit the CHN site, you'll notice that we've changed our look. The
CHN promotional materials have also been updated to reflect the new
branding. Please contact Maria Tan ([log in to unmask]) if you are
interested in distributing CHN promotional materials at your organization's
conferences/events.

C. March is National Nutrition Month
The theme this March is healthy eating and active living for school-age
children and youth. The Dietitians of Canada wants to know about strategies
and resources teachers, health intermediaries, and parents use to help
school-age children and youth "Eat well, Play Well." To submit and view
information on types of initiatives and resources to support healthy eating
and active living in the school-age years, go to www.dietitians.ca/eatwell

D. News from Ever Active Schools and Schools Come Alive

The Alberta Centre for Active Living collaborates with Ever Active Schools
and Schools Come Alive through the Active Lifestyles Portfolio partnership.

The Ever Active Schools (www.everactive.org) and Schools Come Alive
(www.schoolscomealive.org) web sites have been updated to include more
information and resources to support healthy active school communities. New
items on Ever Active Schools include monthly bulletins, a message board, and
a list of upcoming health and active living events in Alberta. New resources
on the Schools Come Alive web site include monthly activity calendars and
the ACTIVE newsletter.
