The original source I cited was not quite correct ( It was on the list of
:Note to self, need to read..., and illustrates the hazards of doing several
things at once)

The originally quoted source should have been:

Mutaner, C and Lynch, J. 2002. Social capital, class gender and race
conflict, and population health: an essay review of Bowling Alone's
implications for social epidemiology. International Journal of Epidemiology
2002;31:261-267

but I like this "corrected" version even better!

Subject: [SDOH] even another view

Another side to the social support/social capital/ social cohesion/
social
networks debate that should be considered, at least for US researchers:

"An unfortunate and often unintended effect of the social
capital/cohesion
research in public health has been to minimize the role of SOCIAL
STRUCTURES as
determinant of population health.Lacking a model for social structure,
social capital research focuses on interpersonal psychology while
ignoring
THE DISTRIBUTION OF INCOME, WEALTH, AND OTHER RESOURCES
Thus, social capital research ignores the role of
CORPORATE MONOPOLIES in restricting access to ADEQUATE RESOURCES and
WEAKENING OR REMOVING
services for a large
proportion of the US population. As a consequence of this psychosocial
focus, social capital (i.e. community empowerment, social networks), is
cast
as the most promising strategy towards health promotion and disease
prevention, minimizing the role of EQUITABLE RESOURCE DISTRIBUTION and
promoting
the privatization of COMMUNITY ASSETS AND ENTITLEMENTS Consistent with
the
state 'devolution'
ideology of new Republicanism, social capital minimizes the role of the
state in the provision of RESOURCES AND LIFE OPPORTUNITIES while making
working class and
non-white communities ultimately responsible for their health status."
