SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN PUBLIC HEALTH
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Salary Range:           $69 224 to $79 819 pa Level C (full-time salary)
                $83 352 to $91 827 pa Level D (full-time salary)
Superannuation:                 Employer contribution of 17% of salary
                Employee contribution of 7% of salary

KEY PURPOSE
To contribute to the academic, research, professional and
administrative activities of the Department of Public Health.
Develop and teach undergraduate and post-graduate topics relating to
social-science based public health research and develop a focus on
teaching and research in health inequities and social epidemiology
within the department.

ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
The Department of Public Health is part of the School of Medicine of
the Faculty of Health Sciences at Flinders University.
We aim to promote health and healthy environments in Australia and
overseas by advocating for and advancing multi-disciplinary public
health research, teaching and practice.
All of our postgraduate courses are based on adult learning models and
can be delivered entirely through distance education (flexible
delivery) mode.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The key responsibilities and selection criteria identified for this
position should be read in conjunction with the Flinders University

•       Co-ordinate a post-graduate degree.
•       Undertake supervision of PhD students
•       Contribute, through grant applications, publications, research team
membership and successful grants to the Department’s research program
on the social and economic determinants of health in particular the
developing Australian Health Inequities Program
•       Develop a focus on public health research especially that related to
health inequities
•       Develop and teach undergraduate and post-graduate topics relating to
public health research, social and economic determinants of health and
research transfer processes
•       Develop industry links in relation to health inequities and public
health research in order to provide expert advice and workforce
development.
•       Contribute to the administration of the Department and, where
appropriate, other parts of the University, as well as engage in
professional or community service.
Represent the Department of Public Health at Faculty, University and
External meetings
•       Promote and provide a safe working environment for students, staff
and visitors with attention to the requirements of the Occupational
Health Safety and Welfare Act, the Workers Rehabilitation and
Compensation Act and Equal Opportunity legislation. Specific

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The successful applicant will be part of a team of academic and
research staff who through successful grant applications, contribute to
the Department’s teaching and research programs on the social and
economic determinants of health.

SELECTION CRITERIA
(Note for intending applicants – applicants should address each
selection criterion individually and should argue their case by citing
evidence to support their claims rather than presenting a list of facts
only).
Essential criteria
1.      PhD in public health or related areas including social science
2.      Strong publication record related to public health research and/or
social and economic determinants of health.
3.      Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching public health at
undergraduate or post-graduate level.
4.      Demonstrated capacity to translate public health research into
policy and practice.
5.      Demonstrated record of attracting competitive research funding.
6.      Demonstrated experience of engagement with public health policy
and/or practice

Desirable criteria
1.      Demonstrated understanding and application of epidemiology and
statistical techniques to social and economic factors affecting
population health status.
2.      Demonstrated success supervising PhD students to successful
completion.
3.      Experience teaching on-line or in distance mode.
4.      Experience of degree co-ordination at post-graduate level.
5.      Experience in networking with other public health research groups.

Appointment at Level D will be contingent on the essential criteria
being met at a higher level. In addition, desirable criteria 1 to 5
will need to be met for appointment to Level D.
