Community, Cash and Control: Catalysts for Healthier and Safer Communities
We are pleased to announce that Dr. David Chavis has agreed to deliver the
keynote address for the 2005 Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe
Communities. His presentation, “Community, Cash and Control: Catalysts for
Healthier and Safer Communities”, will explore the ingredients required to
improve the health and safety of those communities. “No factors have a
greater impact on the psychological, physical, and social well being of
people than having a sense of community, a sense of control, and a sense
that they have adequate cash”, says Dr. Chavis.
Dr. Chavis is President of the Association for the Study and Development
of Community and is known worldwide for his work in the implementation,
support, and evaluation of community initiatives. He recently received a
distinguished career award from the American Psychological Association.
The main focus of Dr. Chavis’s work has been in community development with
the goal of preventing poverty, violence, substance abuse, illness and
other social problems. He led the review of wide-ranging substance abuse
and community development initiatives at the national and local level that
involved the White House Office for National Drug Control Policy, US
Department of Justice, US Center for Substance Abuse Prevention,
Prevention, National Crime Prevention Council, National Cancer Institute,
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and others.
The 2005 Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities will be
held August 23-26 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The event is
co-sponsored by the Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre and the
Atlantic Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health, and is being supported
under the Government of Canada’s National Crime Prevention Strategy. Hosts
for this year’s Institute are the UPEI Centre for Life Long Learning and
the PEI Health Research Institute.

de communautés plus sûres et en meilleure santé
Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que Monsieur David Chavis a accepté de
prononcer le discours-programme de l’Institut d’été sur les collectivités
sûres et en santé de l’Atlantique de 2005. Son exposé intitulé «
Communauté, argent et contrôle : catalyseurs de communautés plus sûres et
en meilleure santé » traitera des facteurs essentiels qui améliorent la
santé et la sécurité dans nos collectivités. « Aucun facteur n’a
d’incidence aussi importante sur le mieux-être psychologique, physique et
social des gens que le sentiment d’appartenir à la collectivité, de
maîtriser sa vie et de posséder assez d’argent », affirme M. Chavis.
M. Chavis est président de l’organisme Association for the Study and
Development of Community et est renommé à l’échelle mondiale pour son
travail relatif à la mise en œuvre, au soutien et à l’évaluation
d’initiatives communautaires. Il a reçu récemment de l’American
Psychological Association un prix de distinction pour l’ensemble de sa
carrière.
M. Chavis a axé son travail principalement sur le développement
communautaire dans le but de prévenir la pauvreté, la violence, l’abus
d’alcool ou d’autres drogues, la maladie et d’autres problèmes sociaux. Il
a piloté l’examen d’initiatives de grande envergure en matière d’abus
d’alcool et d’autres drogues et de développement communautaire, tant au
palier national que régional, notamment pour le compte de la White House
Office for National Drug Control Policy, du département américain de la
Justice, du US Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, du National Crime
Prevention Council, du National Cancer Institute, de la Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation et d’autres encore.
L’Institut d’été sur les collectivités sûres et en santé de l’Atlantique
de 2005 aura lieu à Charlottetown (Île-du-Prince-Édouard) du 23 au 26 août.
Deux organismes, le Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre et le Centre
d’excellence de l’Atlantique pour la santé des femmes, parrainent
l’évènement, lequel est financé par la Stratégie nationale pour la
prévention du crime du gouvernement du Canada. Cette année, les hôtes de
l’Institut sont le UPEI Centre for Life Long Learning et le PEI Health
Research Institute.
