hi all,

it is impossible to really grasp what is going on in new orleans. from the sound of it, we are seeing the fracture of society and the dissolution of the institutions that, in the past, have constrained the "disaster after the disaster".

leadership is clearly lacking. the best i have heard so far is from hayley barbour in mississippi. bush- who really needs to pull things together- cant do it.. he knows the flack that is coming his way for deserting both urban and disaster planning.

i may be wrong about this, but it seems to me that we are in an authentic leadership crisis. i think, first and foremost, the most critical element of response to a disaster is real leadership, a leadership that pulls people together and gives them hope.

i dont think that the country has ever faced such a circumstance. i think it will make all of our efforts to mitigate the disaster problematic. its uncharted terrain we enter.

so what can we do... we have to support those institutions that are trying to function. we have to be entirely inclusive in our response- looking for those most in need. we have to support leaders who begin to pull us together. where are they?

for now, i think we can watch and see what we are asked to do..

and if you are down in new orleans or gulfshore and get this note, let us know how you are and what you need... i am sure that you will find receptive ears.. good luck. you are in my thoughts..

Annual Meeting & Exposition Update

APHA staff has been working collaboratively with the New Orleans Convention
& Visitors Bureau (CVB) over the last several days to determine the
feasibility of continuing to hold the APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition in
the city. The New Orleans CVB notified APHA on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 1,
that all meetings and conventions currently scheduled for New Orleans
through the end of November can no longer be hosted by the city and
alternative arrangements must be made. APHA is currently having
discussions with several cities with regard to the relocation of the APHA
Annual Meeting & Exposition. We appreciate everyone's continued
understanding and support and hope to reach a final decision in the next
week or so the meeting. Please continue to refer to www.apha.org/meetings
<http://www.apha.org/meetings> for further updates.
