New book makes case for social exclusion as precursor to poorer health

Lifestyle choices are secondary to poverty for gauging one's overall health
and well-being, according to a new book called Social Determinants of
Health: Canadian Perspectives.

In the book, Dr. Dennis Raphael and a bevy of contributors outline how
socio-economic factors affect the health of people far beyond traditional
risk factors like diet, tobacco use and exercise.

Raphael is an associate professor and the undergraduate program director of
the School of Health Policy and Management at York University. He tells
Axiom News the "actual, overall conditions of life" are far more important
than eating one's fruits and vegetables... snip
