I submitted the following response to the editor at the Toronto Star. Let us hope that it gets published...

Media 'ghettoizes' the needy

Re Urban Dreams Deferred

GTA, April 10

The aerial map depicting 13 of Toronto's high-risk areas
further 'ghettoizes' these neighbourhoods. Businesses and banks are
discouraged from setting up shop in media-hyped ghettos. Neighbouring
sprawls are prompted to socially exclude these needy nooks. Royson James
calls for targeted investments in these areas. The solution, however,
lies in greater investment towards city-wide supports that service all
Torontonians. Universal programs are less alienating and serve to unify
the experiences and identities of all the residents within a city. Even still, I applaud the Toronto Star for
not pulling their troops out of the war on poverty.
