Position: Research Assistant
Reports to: Vice-President Research

General Description
Under the direction of the Vice-President Research and/or a Senior
Research Associate, the Research Assistant undertakes a wide range of
functions in support of research.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general direction and supervision of a Senior Research
Associate, undertakes research and data retrieval using a variety of
methods, including keyword searches in the Centre library, searches at
other libraries, searches on the Internet, and searches of electronic
data bases using Excel and other programs.
Prepares user-friendly charts and tables for inclusion in research and
policy documents using Excel and other programs; formats documents and
proofreads.
Undertake literature reviews and compiles annotated bibliographies in
support of research projects.
Maintains the Centre's library by gathering information from
governments, non-profit organizations, the Internet and other sources;
by keywording, cataloguing, storing and retrieving information; and by
ordering publications.
Responds to information requests from the public by researching
secondary data sources (including the Internet and other library
sources), preparing information packages and, as necessary, directing
callers to other individuals and organizations.
Responds to internal information requests from CCSD staff by accessing
data from a variety of sources and preparing information packages;
Provides software support to Council staff, including assistance
Internet access and in addressing other software questions.
General Qualifications
Recognized academic qualification in social sciences at the BA level or
higher.
Strong computer skills, including good working knowledge of Windows,
word processing software (e.g. Word), and spreadsheet software (e.g.
Excel), and the Internet. Must be willing to continuously upgrade these
skills, as needed.
Knowledge of social programs, social policy and the social policy
community
Strong verbal and written skills.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Terms of Employment
This is a permanent, full-time position.
This is a unionized position.
