'Cognition, health and survival'
Abstract
The positive association between educational attainment and health is
well known. The most frequently discussed causal pathways are those
linking education to better material circumstances, healthier
behaviours, higher social capital, and greater mental well-being.
Less well understood, however, is the extent to which education is a
proxy for cognitive ability. Evidence is gradually accumulating from
cohort studies that lower cognitive ability in childhood is
associated with earlier mortality, and it is also increasingly clear
that cognitive ability is associated with physical function in the
general population. This talk will examine, in a broad context,
links between cognition, health and survival, and how these links may
be interpreted.
Dr Richards is an MRC staff scientist and a psychologist by
background, although he has been working in epidemiology for many
years, mainly focusing on cognitive ageing.
