Hi again,

Thanks for your responses, Catherine and Dennis - I enjoyed the list of things to do, and am pleased that against this list, I am somewhat on the right track...I should follow my heart (and sarcastic nature) more often and pursue #3 in isolation. What I mean by that is that in the past, I have made #3-like submissions to newspapers or newsletters, but interestingly enough, they never see the light of day...

As I lived until quite recently in Waterloo, am a graduate of the communty psych program at Laurier and have friends in the Health department, I am both knowledgeable and encouraged by what is going on locally in this region. I am also privileged to work within a mental health organization that acknowledges the SDOH and attempts to work them into programming and services...so that's good too. But wow, do these things ever seem to go slowly, especially when we read releases from the M of H like we just did...sometimes it seems hard not to be reduced to screaming like tantrumming toddlers...hey, wait a minute, have we tried THAT?!

Ontario

Thank you Kristi for this. I frequently feel like screaming! I suggest
the following:

1. Responding quickly and supporting columnists and health reporters who go
against the grain.
2. Attempting to communicate with opposition politicians. However, when
the conservatives were in power in Ontario, I found willing listeners in
the opposition Liberals. Now that the Liberals are in power, they are
doing the same thing!
3. Providing parodies and ridiculing the "health authorities" who know what
they are doing is crass self-advancement. This is an excellent stress
reliever!
4. Supporting those health units doing good things and letting the world
know about it!: Waterloo, Sudbury, Chinook, Peterborough, Ottawa, Interior
Region, Montreal.
5. Sending letters to newspaper editors.
6. Reading the European health policy literatures to remind ourselves that
we are the rational ones and that the lifestyle advocates are not.
7. SUPPORTING PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION: the single factor likely to lead
to positive change.

others...?
