SYNOPSIS
A reading from the book Policies of Exclusion, Poverty & Health: Stories from the front. Compiled,
with Introduction and Reports by Chrystal Ocean. Copyright 2005.

Raised in poverty, Dana had the deck stacked against her; but poverty alone couldn't account for the
things to come. More relevant for Dana was her family's history of disruptive and abusive
relationships, a pattern which, knowing it best, she repeated. Now, having divested herself of
harmful relationships, Dana faces a further challenge, that of raising a child with Duchennes
Muscular Dystrophy. In spite of her hardships, in the end Dana's story evinces hope, not least
because of the strength of her own resiliency and tenacity.
