Social Determinants and the Future of the Public's Health in the 21st
Century
Friday, February 27, 2 to 3:30 Health Sciences Building Turner Auditorium
D-209
Last year the Institute of Medicine published a book, THE FUTURE OF THE
PUBLIC'S HEALTH IN THE 21st CENTURY, which stated "For years, the life
expectancies of both men and women in the United States have lagged behind
those of their counterparts in most other industrialized nations"
and "more egalitarian societies (i.e., those with a less steep
differential between the richest and the poorest) have better average
health". Our Dean was on the committee that produced the report. Lisa
Berkman, who co-edited the first book on social epidemiology with Ichiro
Kawachi will discuss the report and social determinants of health.
Professor Berkman is the Chair of the Department of Health and Social
Behavior at Harvard University.
