Dear SDOH colleagues,

Inspired in part by Community-Campus Partnerships for Health's 
Community-Engaged Scholarship Toolkit (www.communityengagedscholarship.info), 
the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation has launched Recognition, a 
series of pamphlets targeted at university administrators and the community of 
applied health services researchers.

One of the aims of Recognition is to uncover how Canadian universities already 
make applied work count in the tenure and promotion review process.  Those 
universities that have tried a new way of doing things deserve to be recognized 
for their efforts; those looking to make a change should benefit from hearing 
the new ideas and lessons learned.  The Foundation is interested in knowing 
what Canadian universities have done to appropriately assess and reward applied 
scholarship. The most innovative and instructive cases will be featured in 
upcoming issues of Recognition.  Submissions of innovative practices are due 
July 15, 2006.

The launch notice for Recognition reads:

"Most universities esteem applied scholarship, understand how its complementary 
activities - such as knowledge transfer and exchange - enhance the impact of 
research, and would like to recognize and reward these activities. Often the 
will is there but the tools for getting it done are missing. Answering this 
need, the foundation is pleased to launch "Recognition," a series highlighting 
tools, tips, and promising practices.

We hope that each issue will help researchers or administrators change how 
applied work is recognized and rewarded in their university. Our first issue 
looks at the creative professional activity dossier employed by the University 
of Toronto's department of psychiatry to document achievements in knowledge 
transfer and exchange.

We hope to continue to highlight examples of universities trying to assess and 
reward the activities of applied scholarship that haven't traditionally been 
acknowledged in the promotion process. Along with the first issue of 
"Recognition" we are releasing a call for innovative practices. The most 
innovative and instructive cases will be featured in upcoming issues of 
"Recognition."
