Aims:
This course introduces the unique contribution that the spatial and wide
ranging perspectives of human geography make to public health issues,
debates and policies; it shows the insights and ideas health geography can
offer.

The course adopts a distinctive spatial approach to exploring and
communicating the various impacts of place, location, geographical scale,
distance and physical and social environments on public health problems,
policies and programs. It is aimed at professionals in population health,
health promotion, epidemiology and clinical health fields.

Through a series of seminars, lectures and workshops, participants will
develop the skills to apply geographical theories and methods to a range of
public health settings.

The five-day course covers topics such as:
* space, place and location as a framework for understanding public health
issues.
* the ways in which health and illness are related to different places and
environments from the local to the global.
* geographic methods in public health research (mapping methods for
different types of data and for different audiences; mapping small area
data, cluster analysis using SatScan).
* the linkages between epidemiological and geographical perspectives in
public health.
* health, place and therapeutic landscapes.
* availability and accessibility of services for different population
groups.
* ways of looking at health inequities and the effect of scale.
* the application of geographical frameworks to public health issues and
practice.

The course will draw on a wide range of examples to illustrate these topics,
including:
Improving the delivery of HIV/AIDS services in the USA using GIS; measuring
access to food in Australia; variations in individuals' conceptions of
neighbourhood; paediatric lead ingestion risk and socio-spatial processes;
how personal environments and spaces are shaped by disability; space and
place as underlying causes of obesity; infectious disease, bioterrorism &
national security; suicide and mental health in urban and rural areas.

Course Facilitator:
