Hello,
My name is Talia Singer and I'm a Public Health nurse here in Toronto. I am so disappointed that I am not able to make the community forum due to prior commitments. Is there a way you can send me some information or some of the speakers notes from the forum for my reference?
This is a huge issue, and the fact that we don't have nurses allocated to dealing with suicide prevention in Toronto leaves schools without any help.
Thank you,
Talia

Preventing Teen Suicide
Building Partnerships for a Stronger Community

May 13th, 2004
Stoney Creek Municipal Centre
Highway 8 at Jones Rd
8:30 am to 4:00 pm

Background
Suicide is a complex and urgent public health issue. In 1997, Statistics
Canada reported that suicide was the cause of death for 3700 people in
Canada. This forum will provide people with an opportunity to explore
community building and asset building and their role in suicide prevention.
This is the third community forum aimed at increasing knowledge and
awareness of suicide prevention. Please join us to learn more about this
important topic.

The forum will provide participants with the opportunity to:

* Explore the role community and capacity building contributes to
suicide prevention.
*
* Participate in a small group session on a specific topic area
*
* Build on the momentum and learning from the first two community
forums.

* Network with others from a variety of sectors, including health,

Speakers:

Dr. Heather Fiske: Dr. Fiske is a psychologist with 30 years experience
working with suicidal people and their families and with survivors of
suicide. Currently she is in private practice and active in clinical
consultation, supervision and education. Her aim as a therapist and educator
is to develop approaches that are respectful and client-centered, and that
make use of each person's resources of hope and healing.

Carol Butler: Carol is the Community Director for Lamplight a charitable
organization reaching out to teens to build self-esteem and give them life
changing direction and support through their web-based response centre,
media campaigns, school presentations and community events.

Anne Ehrlich: Anne has been on faculty at McMaster University in the School
of Nursing and a PHRED (Public Health Research, Education and Development)
consultant for the past 10 years. Anne has conducted research and evaluation
projects in neighbourhood determinants to health, primary health care models
in underserved urban and rural populations and providing equal access to
public health programmes for ethno-culturally diverse community groups. Most
of her knowledge and experience in community building comes from living and
working for 8 years in Africa and raising sheep and her sons in rural
Ontario.
