Job Opportunity - WCWL Research Associate

Project Description

The Western Canada Wait List Project (WCWL) is a collaborative undertaking
of four ministries of health, four medical associations, seven regional
health authorities, and four health research centres. This unique
collaboration has been effective in bringing together the interests,
knowledge and skills of researchers, clinicians and key stakeholders to
achieve a common purpose: "to improve the fairness of the system, so that
Canadians' access to appropriate and effective medical services is
prioritized on the basis of need and potential benefit." More information
about the project is available at www.wcwl.org

Position Overview

Reporting to the project director, this senior associate will help design
and carry out an evaluation of the use of WCWL wait list priorization
tools in hip & knee replacement, general surgery, children's mental
health, and cataract surgery. The implementation will occur within seven
large regional health authorities in Western Canada.

The ideal associate will have a solid background in research methodology
(e.g., health services or evaluation or epidemiology) and working
knowledge of clinical practice. Academic preparation might consist of a
Master's degree followed by a minimum 5 years research experience,
clinical epidemiology, or completion of a PhD in a related area. The key
requirement is proven strength in research design and methodology.

Ideally this associate would be located in the administrative centre
(Calgary) or at one of the participating WCWL Partners. Candidates
interested in secondment or similar arrangement may be particularly suited
to this opportunity. The initial term will be for 12 months, beginning as
soon as possible but no later than June 1, 2002. The position is
envisioned as full-time but some flexibility is possible to accommodate
the ideal individual.

Main Responsibilities
* Draft the research protocols in conjunction with the research committee.
* Participate in the data collection, analysis, and reporting.
* Develop an effective working relationship with the local implementation
teams and with WCWL staff and research associates
* Participate in writing for publication in academic journals

Interested individuals should email their resume and letter of application
(in MS Word format) prior to Friday May 17, 2002 to Mr. John McGurran,
Project Director c/o [log in to unmask]
