Kate:

Here are a few additional reports that may be of value to you:

"Housing and Health: Public Health Implications of the Crisis in
Affordable Housing." Toronto Department of Public Health, 1984 (I don't
believe that this 59-page report is available electronically). The City
of Toronto did some fairly extensive work on homelessness and health in
the 1980s. You might want to contact Liz Jantzen at the Toronto
Department of Public Health.

"Public Inquiry into the Effects of Homelessness on Health." Toronto,
1987. Community-based inquiry (the results are not available
electronically).

"Shelter Inspections Reports." Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, 2000
and 2003. The reports are available on-line at www.tdrc.net.

"Toronto TB Inquiry." Tuberculosis Action Group, 2003. Available on-line
at www.tdrc.net.

"Bed Bugs." Dr. Timothy Myles, Centre for Urban and Community Studies,
University of Toronto. Research Bulletin available on-line at
www.urbancentre.utoronto.ca.

"Substance use and homelessness," Action research study, Street Health,
2002. I don't believe that this is available on-line, but should be
available from Street Health in Toronto.

For issues around nutrition and homelessness, do a search for the work
of Dr. Valerie Tarasuk of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of
Toronto. She has good background info in this area. Dr. Sarah Wakefield
in the Faculty of Geography also has excellent resources. She is
associated with the Centre for Urban Health Initiatives at the U of T.

Dr. Stephen Hwang, an epidemiologist at the Inner City Health Unit at
St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, has done important research on
mortality and morbidity among the homeless. You can find three of his
recent research reports in the "reports" section of the Toronto Disaster
Relief Committee Web site at www.tdrc.net.

In addition, check out the Web site of the Centre for Urban and
Community Studies at www.urbancentre.utoronto.ca. There is an on-line
search engine, plus a good page of links to Canadian and international
Web sites.

The Housing Again Web site has not been updated lately, but has a good
on-line library. Point your browser to www.housingagain.web.net and then
click on "resources".

Hope this helps. . .

- Michael

Subject: Street Health reports?

I am putting together a small literature review on existing academic and
other
research on the health status of homeless people in Canada. I am looking
for
studies that are comprehensive and might be comparable to the type of
community
health surveys undertaken by government agenices.

As far as I know, the 1992 'Street Health Report'
<http://www.tdrc.net/HealthRpt_sec01.pdf>, for Toronto, is the only
report
of this kind. I am wondering if anyone knows of any similar reports,
published
or unpublished, that have been created in other parts of the country?

If so, can you please pass on any information you have about them,
including
any contact people you may know about or information on how we can get a
hold
of the report?

Thanks very much.
