It's a mistake to assume that someone claiming to represent interests in 
Nigeria is necessarily there, or from there.

 A couple of years back, one of these scams was busted by the police in 
Toronto, Canada. Just earlier this summer a huge organized operation was 
broken up in Spain. It had been raking in millions of dollars from 
gullible surfers around the world.

When I first went online in the mid-1990's I might have gotten three or 
four of these things in a year. Just before I closed my last internet 
account at the beginning of June this year, the day where I received 
fewer than half a dozen of these things (claiming to be from people 
residing in or from any of about twenty different countries) was a slow day.

While the early perpetrators of this kind of scam may well have been 
Nigerian nationals, this type of hoodwink has now become so popular that 
the authors of these missives could literally be from anywhere in the 
world. It is also very easy to 'spoof' an e-mail address or to route a 
message through someone else's ISP using an open proxy. This is how a 
lot of spammers operate.
