Re: That `boomer' bulge, Toronto Star, Feb. 16, 2006

Considering the daily pummeling the Canadian public receives from the media
and associations such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation on the dangers of
sloth and indulgence, it is hard to believe that the scientific literature
finds these factors to be rather small contributers to the incidence of,
and death from, heart disease and other killers. Instead, the research
literature demonstrates conclusively that the effects of poverty and income
insecurity, unemployment and employment insecurity, and stress and anxiety
about meeting basic needs upon these killers fars outweights the "sloth and
fat" risks. We should not be surprised that the governments respnsible for
these unpleasant living conditions prefer our gazes be averted from these
findings. But does the media and Heart and Stroke Foundation need to be
complicit in these activities?
