Poor education and early death
Sunday, February 19, 2006
HE'S NOT AN educator, but Dr. Tony Iton, the Health Officer for Alameda
County, spends much of his time worrying not only about measles and AIDS,
but also about the appalling low graduation rates in Oakland, the largest
school district in his county.
That's because leaving school without a high school diploma can be a matter
of life and death.
National health statistics show that people who don't graduate from high
school are more likely to suffer from serious chronic ailments such as
heart disease, cancer and diabetes. They're also far more likely to die
earlier than people with higher levels of education, especially compared to
those who make it to college.
What this means is that the consequences of the successes and failures of
the Oakland school system, and others like it, will be felt well beyond
their boundaries. All of us will end up paying for lost productivity and
excess health costs these young people are likely to incur as a result of
their failure in school -- and the school's failure of them... SNIP
