Nation's health remains divided
A study in the latest edition of the British Medical Journal has found that
there is still a large north-south divide in the health of the nation.
However, the research indicates that while Scots lag behind the south of
England, they are less likely than people in Wales and Northern England to
rate their health as "not good".
The report was carried out by academics at Liverpool University.
Its aim was to examine the north-south divide in the nation's health.
Researchers used data from the 2001 census, which asked people to rate
their health in three categories: "good", "fairly good" or "not good".
Whilst Scots rated their health as poorer than people in the south west or
the south east of England, those living in Wales and the north of England
said their health was significantly worse.
In Scotland, the biggest problem was found to be the divide between social
classes.
Those in manual jobs ranked themselves nearly three times unhealthier than
top professionals.
However, this health gap was just as wide in London.
