As a current student....
I personally feel that as structured institutions of learning- universities
can play a broker between community initiatives and government ministries.
More money from the government is directly being disseminated to academic
institutions for the purpose of research- community groups should therefore
bend the ears of those involved in research be it research centres within
universities or specific professors to help mold or suggest areas of study.
At a recent think tank amongst health leaders in Ontario what became
abundantly clear to me was that there is a disconnect between community
needs--- research results (how to use them, if they even are useful)---and
the government. For example the government doesn't always understand what
its constituents need nor does it know how to use the results brought forth
in research (regardless of quality). Look at it another way, researchers
sometimes do not know how to publicize their results in ways that the
community and government can understand and use!!! To my perspective this
is a significant problem. A possible way to solve this is if the three
institutions/groups worked together or at least interacted in significant
ways.
