Great timely discussion going on CHCs.

With only 60 odd CHCs, a very small percentage of Ontarians now have access
to CHCs for primary care. Depending on the number of docs and nurse
practitioner each CHCs is able to provide family practice care to 900-1200
individuals. It needs to be recognised that most chcs serve people with
complex life situations. I do think that as more physicians sign up as FHNs
and FHGs(these models are physician controlled), more ontarians with complex
issues will be left out, no body will want them.Currently most CHCs have
geographically defined communities and any one who lives in that geography
is eligible to join them as members or as clients. We will be forced to
redefine the eligibility criteria. We within the CHC sector feel very
strongly that CHCs should be available for all ontarians and not only for
the marginalised. In isolated communities often the CHCs are the only
priamry care providers.

The dimension of community health promotion, (distinct from population
health), has been missing in this dialogue.CHCs are the only health care
model that attempts to bring about change at community or neighbourhood
level. We ofcourse need many more chcs to be able to serve all eligible
ontarians. If we had more CHCs across the province with commuinty control,
Ontario as a province will be a healthier place to live in. There are
atleast another 40 communities ready and requesting for CHCs in theri
communities.

Dennis, thanks. Would you know how many Ontario citizens have access to this
entitlement? Can anyone in Ontario join their nearest CHC?

Are the human resources in the CHC's sufficient to care for all Ontario
residents who are entitled to the service?
Thanks for taking the time.
