Gaps becoming too wide to ignore

Hope for a better city
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editorial, Oct. 10.
While I admire the optimism of the editorial writer who states, "The Vital
Signs report shows that challenges remain, but they can be overcome with
vision, courage and determination to build a better city," I have my
doubts. The growing gaps in income and wealth among rich and poor, people
of colour and whites, and homeowners and renters, are a result of profound
structural inequalities related to tax laws and wages, public policies that
punish the poor and reward the already rich, and an unwillingness of
governments and policy-makers to challenge the power of the business and
economic elites that are calling the shots. Against these forces, vision,
courage and determination count for little.
