Dear Sara,

I would suggest any of Paul Farmer's writings/stories about people in poverty as a great source of examples and ideas for items in the survey (which then will not be short :). Please see Farmer's books: Infections and inequalities; Pathologies of power: health human rights and the new war on the poor; or any other.

Best regards,
Bojana

Subject: [SDOH] individual poverty assessment tool

This is going to seem like an incredibly inane request but does anyone know of an individual quiz or assessment tool that people coming to a forum on poverty and health would do that would increase their understanding of what it means to be poor?
Something that would highlight social exclusion, and the day to day realities of living in poverty.
like for example... My child cannot attend friend's birthday parties because I cannot afford to buy a gift.
I worry what would happen if I became ill...
I don't have any money to get winter boots for my child

I know I could pull out things from the various market basket measures that are used but wondered if anyone had already created something along these lines?
Recently we heard that most Canadians identify themselves as being middle class...even those living at both ends of the spectrum. We thought a tool like the one above requested might give people permission to identify the fact that they are indeed poor (I'm thinking they already know this and don't need a tool to tell them!).
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Sara
