Food For Talk presents our final seminar of the fall semester

Food Policy Councils: Challenges and Successes
Panelists Janice Etter, Wendy Mendes and Doreen Ojala
Moderated by Wayne Roberts
Friday, December 8, 2006
2:00-4:00 pm
7th floor, Heaslip House, Ryerson University, 297 Victoria Street

Janice Etter is the Citizen Co-Chair of the Toronto Food Policy
Council. She is one of two TFPC representatives on the GTA
Agricultural Action Committee, and a member of the board of Local
Flavour Plus. She is co-author of Toronto's Pedestrian Charter, an
experience that introduced her to many planners and enabled her to
play an important role advocating for the inclusion of food security
issues in Toronto's Official Plan. In addition to chairing the TFPC
over the past four years, she is also Chair of the Board of
Montgomery's Inn, a museum in Etobicoke that is developing innovative
programs that stress the importance of local food. The Inn is a member
of Slow Food, and is hoping to restore its original 1830 bake oven for
community use, and start both a farmers' market and community garden.

Wendy Mendes is the Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Urban Health
Initiatives at the University of Toronto. Her research interests
include local governance, urban planning, sustainable development and
food policy. Her dissertation on food policy and local governance in
Vancouver was nominated for two national awards. From 2001 - 2006, Dr.
Mendes worked as a Social Planner for the City of Vancouver where she
was actively involved in the development and implementation of the
City's food policy mandate. Her work extends to the international
arena including on-going work with the International Development
Research Centre (IDRC) in Ottawa.

Doreen Ojala was born in Timmins, ON. Her educational experience
includes Environmenal Science, Canadore, 1978 and Environmental Earth
Science, Laurentian University, 1996. Past work experience includes
Recycling and Waste Audit Coordinator, Laurentian University 1993,

Green Communities Association 1997. She's a founder of a
not-for-profit called The Foodshed Project and has been the Foodshed
Project Manager since 2002. Since 2003, Doreen has been the Co-Chair
of the Sudbury-Manitoulin Food Security Network. She is currently
working towards the Food Security Certificate at Ryerson University.
