It is my understanding that Twain himself, in contrast with many of the
ragged charachters he wrote about from Huck Finn to the silver-mine roughs,
was very fastidious about cleanliness and personal hygiene. The White suit
was apparently a way for him to exhibit the spotlessness of his dress. I
think there is reference to this in Mark Twain A-Z.
