The Guardian quote is from _The Mysterious Stranger_ edited
by Paine in 1916.  That passage appears to be accurate and from
the unfinished novel "The Chronicle of Young Satan."  It is
reprinted in _Mark Twain's Mysterious Stranger Manuscripts_, p. 155-156
(Univ. of California Press, 1969.)
