Yes--these are INDEED letters! Although my sense of humor must be slipping.
I usually find that Mark Twain is a bit funnier than this.  It took me
several minutes of searching to locate the "nub." I would explain it to
others who missed it, but a joke is rarely funny if explained, as I find all
the time in my classes...
