The photo of the ballplayers around the Sphinx on the 1889 Spalding Tour has
been published many times in comprehensive histories of the sport.  Spalding
was the consummate publicist, for both the sport and his own sporting goods
firm, which manufactured the official National League baseballs at the time,
twelve years prior to the establishment of the American League by Bancroft
Johnson.
