Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities

A commitment and energy for intersectoral capacity building provides the
momentum for a new chapter in the development of a Health Promotion Summer
Institute for Atlantic Canada. The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and
Safe Communities will be held this year on August 22-25, 2004 at the
University of Prince Edward Island.

This year's theme "Meeting of the Minds: Creating a Healthier Atlantic
Canada", will make the links between health promotion, crime prevention and
social development, and bring together diverse sectors to create a shared
agenda for healthy and safe communities in Atlantic Canada. The Institute is
based on the belief that "societal issues have a better chance of being
addressed if we recognize the intimate interrelationships and connections
that exist between social, health, and economic policy, and take steps to
develop the skills and knowledge to take action." (Summer Institute
Proposal, 2004)

The 2004 Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities is
co-sponsored by the Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre and the
Atlantic Centre of Excellence for Women's Health, and is being supported
under the Government of Canada's National Crime Prevention Strategy. Hosts
for this year's Institute are the UPEI Centre for Life Long Learning and the
PEI Health Research Institute.

An Advisory Committee with broad representation from the four Atlantic
Provinces has been established to design a program that will foster the
development of 'shared language' for the various sectors; showcase current
research, and best practice; and be interactive, engaging participants in
the creation of innovative solutions to real issues and a collective plan
for regional capacity development. The program will offer workshops on
skills needed for health promotion and crime prevention practitioners, such
as developing partnerships, working collaboratively across sectors,
conducting community research, designing programs, facilitating groups,
leadership for change, writing funding proposals, project management, and
other hands-on skills. There will also be time to enjoy the beauty of PEI in
August!

Plan now to reserve the dates of August 22-25 and join practitioners,
academics and policy makers from health, education, social and economic
development, and justice in creating a healthier and safer Atlantic Canada.
