Brief History of TDRC
The Toronto Disaster Relief Committee (TDRC) is a committee
which formed in May of 1998 to develop a campaign that
homelessness be considered a national disaster. The
committee is structured with a Steering Committee which
oversees the direction of TDRC work. The committee is
supported by a general membership, a network of agencies,
and alliances both within Toronto and across the country.
TDRC's work focuses on local emergency and relief issues in
Toronto as well as provincial and federal advocacy efforts
to alleviate and end homelessness. The balance and focus of
this work varies throughout the year.
TDRC plays a central role in the National Housing and
Homelessness Network which coordinates work nationally on
our lobby campaigns for a national housing programme.
Job Responsibilities
1. Administrative Support
-extensive communication by phone, mail, email and fax
responding to queries about TDRC regarding
homelessness/housing issues
-some fund-raising related work
-minute taking for TDRC Steering Committee, general
membership and subcommittee meetings
-keeps TDRC materials updated and accessible
-some bookkeeping, bill payment
-filing and general organizing/archiving of materials
2. Communication and Outreach
-facilitates communication between Steering Committee
members, sub-committees and general membership
-enables participation in TDRC by developing a volunteer
base, provides support and guidance to newsletter
coordinator, speakers bureau, web site manager and
sub-committees
-develops outreach materials to support campaigns (flyers,
posters, etc.)
-clear houses relevant information to Steering Committee,
membership and networks
-maintains an up to date data base for email
communications, media contacts
3. Advocacy and Campaign Work
-develops and supports involvement of other sectors
(faith, student, labour) on housing/homelessness campaigns
-networks with community to support diversity within TDRC
- monitors relevant policy decisions at all levels of
government and assists with development and implementation
of lobby efforts, locally, provincially and nationally
-support for TDRC media conferences and events
Experience/skills required include:
Knowledge of issues related to poverty, homelessness,
housing.
History of social activism and community development.
Advanced computer skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Self-directed and independent style with commitment to
inclusiveness and involvement of the community.
Experience with fund-raising.
French language an asset
Terms of the contract
This is a 6 month contract that may have the possibility of
renewal.
It is a 4 day per week job (30 hours).
Up to one day per week will be focused on national work.
Flexibility in hours required which may include some evening
and weekend work. Negotiable flex time.
Pay rate starts at $18. per hour plus 4% in lieu of
vacation.
