We have the Healthy Schools, Healthy Kids program at the Sudbury & District
Health Unit. The program is used to promote healthy eating and healthy
lifestyles (prevention of smoking and promotion of physical activity). Most
of the HSHK schools offer only healthy choices in their cafeterias and
canteens and promote good nutrition. My son's school, for example has
decided to no longer offer pop and potato chips and do not sell chocolate
bars, for example, for fundraising. The HSHK committee is made up of
teachers and parents. Part of the program consists of education as well as
making healthy choices available.

While I agree that ending childhood poverty is of the utmost importance, it
is not an excuse for doing nothing about the junk food that is in our
schools. Food security programs also have their place. Breakfast and lunch
programs are essential. I also understand that children who are living in
poverty have much bigger problems than pop in their school.

I also don't think we are trying to change the world here, or even change
everyone's eating habits. Perhaps this will help to improve habits.
Children still need to be educated about making healthy food choices. I am
not naive enough to believe that this will prevent all children from ever
eating junk food, but we have to take responsibility for what we offer our
children.

Subject: banning pop/junk food in schools

Hi everyone,

I am interested in finding out whether anyone in Ontario or Canada is
working on banning the sale of pop or other junk food in schools (by
elminating vending machines and/or cafeteria sales). Please let me know if
you are aware of any efforts in this area.

Thanks in advance.

Jodi
