Stroke Prevention Project Coordinator
The Popularized Stroke Prevention Project is a project of the Self-Help Resource Centre. Its purpose is to develop an empowering stroke prevention educational model based on the train-the trainer method. The project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Job summary
The Stroke Prevention Project Coordinator works under the supervision of the Executive Director within a team environment to develop and implement a stroke prevention educational model. Essential function of the job includes: Identification of knowledge, attitude and behavior related to the stroke risk factors amongst the communities with specific socio-demographic characteristics, and development of audience-specific health promotion materials for this population.
Purpose of the Position
The purpose of the position is to facilitate the achievement of the over all objectives of the project:
· To develop tailored educational materials for stroke prevention addressing specific risk factors;
· To develop complementary train-the-trainer educational material for the delivery of the educational model;
· To train a number of lay-health promoters based on the above model;
· To track and monitor project activities as part of the ongoing evaluation of the project;
Major responsibilities
In cooperation with a number of consultants the Stroke Prevention Project Coordinator will be responsible
· To liaise with key organizations working on stroke prevention and its risk factors;
· To gather and review existing stroke prevention materials to be reviewed by the focus groups
· To work in partnership with selected Public health Units, Community Health Centres, specific health agencies, community based organizations;
· To recruit, select and organize three focus groups composed of diverse stakeholders in three regions;
· To develop/modify educational materials based on adult education and empowerment approaches for a culturally and socio-economically diverse communities;
· To develop a train-the-trainers complementary model for the stroke prevention educational materials;
· To train a selected number of lay-health promoters who will deliver the educational model beyond the life of the project;
· To ensure the timely delivery of the above within an ongoing evaluation framework;
· To participate in and present on behalf of the project at conferences and symposia;
· To assume shared office responsibilities when needed;
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications
· Familiarity with self-help/mutual aid strategies;
· Strong group facilitation skills, ability to foster an environment of team work with diverse stakeholders;
· Demonstrated knowledge and experience of working with culturally diverse and socio-economically marginalized communities;
· Knowledge of and experience in adult education, participatory and empowerment approaches;
· Experience in delivery of training workshops;
· Excellent communication skills - face to face and on-line, with individuals and groups
· Advanced writing and research skills for the development of educational materials;
· Relevant health or social sciences degree; with knowledge of community health, health promotion and population health;
· Computer and internet skills; Windows 98, MS Office 2000 including Word, Access, Power Point, comfortable with using online forums; web page or html editing an asset
· Bilingual an asset
· Energetic, enthusiastic team player who is at the same time a flexible independent worker
Compensation and hours of work
It is a full-time contract position, starting Dec 15, 2003,
35 hours weekly (flexible time including evenings and weekends)
Frequent travel is required.
