Review Group Coordinator

Cochrane Musculoskeletal Group (CMSG)

 

The Cochrane Collaboration is an international network of individuals and
organizations committed to preparing, maintaining and disseminating
systematic reviews of health care interventions ( <http://www.cochrane.org/>
www.cochrane.org) to help people make well-informed decisions about health
care.  The CMSG ( <http://www.epoc.uottawa.ca/> www.cochranemsk.org) focuses
on reviews of interventions for musculoskeletal conditions. The CMSG has two
distinct roles in moving musculoskeletal knowledge into action. The first
role is synthesizing research by producing high quality systematic reviews.
The second role is dissemination of these reviews in a user-friendly format
to potential users. 

 

The CMSG review coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day management of
the group and the supervision of university co-op student.  The coordinator
will work closely with the coordinating editor, Dr. Peter Tugwell, who holds
a Canada Research Chair in Health Equity and is the Director of the Centre
for Global Health at the University of Ottawa.   As the coordinator you will
also work closely with the other 8 CMSG editors, editorial base staff and
international researchers in the field, to facilitate the production and
updating of systematic reviews within the scope of CMSG.  You will be
responsible for day-to-day management of the group including coordination of
all activities, responding to queries, facilitating liaison and
communication between editors and reviewers, providing methodological
support to reviewers to develop reviews (including software support),
preparing reviews for publication and producing newsletters.  You will also
conduct one-on-one training and workshops for consumers and reviewers and
contribute to new approaches to presenting results in a friendly format.
Within the Cochrane collaboration you will be part of an international group
of review group coordinators - connecting you to a large and active network.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

1.      Coordinate the development of systematic reviews: from the initial
receipt of a proposed title for a review, to the inclusion of the completed
review in the Cochrane Library.  This involves communicating with other
Cochrane entities, researchers, the editors.
2.      Communication: arrange and orchestrate editorial meetings,
correspond with review teams, prepare presentations and workshops.  Answer
queries from prospective members the public and other interested parties
about CMSG.
3.      Dissemination: assist with the development and implementation of a
research transfer strategy for CMSG reviews.  Prepare newsletters and other
resource materials for both reviewers and users of CMSG reviews.
4.      Contribute to methodological research to advance the quality and
user friendliness of systematic reviews.
5.      Prepare grant applications and internal and external budgets,
completing funding reports, progress reports and Cochrane collaboration
monitoring reports.
6.      Opportunity to participate in musculoskeletal research related to
outcome measures, equity effectiveness of musculoskeletal interventions, and
the Bone and Joint decade http://www.bonejointdecade.org/. 

 

 

 




Organizational Relationships

As Cochrane Coordinator, the incumbent will receive direction from the CMSG
editors, (primarily Dr. Peter Tugwell) and the Cochrane Collaboration.  The
incumbent will work closely with the knowledge translation specialist and
research assistant and other Cochrane staff as required.  The position is
based at the Institute of Population Health (IPH), University of Ottawa
(www.iph.uottawa.ca <http://www.iph.uottawa.ca/> ).  The Cochrane Effective
Practice and Organisation of Care Group is also based at the IPH. 

 

Skills & Experience Required:

The incumbent must be a self-starter with demonstrated organizational
skills, needed to complete a high volume of work within a short time frame.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including computer
competency (word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, electronic mail)
and an interest in working both independently and as a team member are
essential.  You will have good quantitative and analytical skills and
experience or knowledge of systematic review/ meta-analysis methodology.  

 

Education:

Master's degree in clinical epidemiology or other relevant discipline is
preferred. Individuals with a Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline and
significant critical appraisal or research experience will be considered. 

 

The position is grant funded and initially tenable for 12 months with
likelihood of extension.
